"Earthmen - this is the voice of the Mysterons. We have watched you for centuries. Your violence disgusts us, and now you visit it upon us. You cannot destroy us, Earthmen - but now we will crush your world…"

Dateline: the day after tomorrow. When a mysterious extraterrestrial signal is detected emanating from Mars, the world security organisation known as Spectrum sends agents Captain Scarlet and Captain Black to investigate. The two men soon discover the source of the signals: a huge alien city, which materialises into visibility before their startled eyes. The aliens despatch a probe to examine the Earth vehicle, but Black assumes it to be hostile, and fires a burst of missiles which utterly destroys the entire city. However, the alien buildings immediately reform using an unearthly process known as retrometabolism, and the city’s inhabitants, the Mysterons, immediately retaliate by killing Black and declaring war on Earth. The Mysterons are able convert anyone or anything to their cause by destroying the original and then recreating it as a new, ‘Mysteronised’ agent - capable of employing any means necessary to bring about the downfall of the human race…

From Spectrum’s high-flying centre of operations, Skybase, its leader, Colonel White, uses all available resources to thwart the Mysteron threat, including a crack team of colour-coded agents; the sleek but deadly Angel Interceptors, also known as Falcons; the tank-like Rhinos; and the ultra-fast Raid bikes. One of Spectrum’s top agents is Captain Scarlet; once a Mysteron agent, Scarlet was able to throw off his conditioning and regain his sense of loyalty to Spectrum, with the added bonus that he is now indestructible. Fearless in his mission to protect Earth, Captain Scarlet is aided by the brave and intelligent Captain Blue, and together they attempt to defeat the menace of the Mysterons.

‘…New Captain Scarlet’ is based upon Gerry Anderson’s immensely popular series from the 1960s, ‘Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons’, only this time instead of puppets we now have motion-capture CGI, which gives each character much more believability and enables each episode to be packed with break-neck action and stunning visuals. This reworking is very faithful to the original series, and uses the same premise and characters, albeit with a few small exceptions: Captain Scarlet joins Captain Black on the ill-fated mission to Mars; Lieutenant Green is now a woman; Spectrum’s base of operations is called Skybase; the vehicles are much more chunky, and named after animals (Cheetahs, Falcons, Bisons - eh? Bisons?? What next - Llamas and Aadvarks?!?!). Just like the original, the remake is dark and gritty, and features some particularly gruesome deaths - the kids will love it!

The first season of ‘Gerry Anderson’s New Captain Scarlet’ cost £25 Million for twenty-six episodes, the first thirteen of which were each split into two parts and shown within CITV’s Saturday morning show, ‘Ministry of Mayhem’. ’Gerry Anderson’s New Captain Scarlet’ shows great promise - so it looks like the adventures of Captain Scarlet will continue for years to come!
